This is the back side of the Kuerner Farm in Chadds Ford, PA. The barn is an English Bank Barn. The idea was to allow gravity to assist you in unloading hay. Carts with hay would be pulled up the bank into the back of the barn. This was actually the second level of the barn, and the bales could be thrown down for storage on the first level. This was much easier than trying to lift them up from the bottom to stack them.
The barn was built around 1880. The original was burned down by cinders from the Pennsylvania Rail Road. Apparently it took some legal action for the owner to get relief from the railroad. But, eventually the company brought a brand new barn (by rail, of course) and put it up on the site of the old one.
A train on those tracks killed NC Wyeth about 150 yards from here in the 1940's, when his car stalled on the track.
The painting is ten inches wide by eight inches tall. It is an oil on a board. It was painted on-site, en plein air.
